Beware the Mathematician
I don’t get much time to mess around with code these days, but one of the things that has really caught my eye recently is the ability of AJAX technology to add an interactive dimension to websites.
So, in an effort to make my humble webbie a bit more Web 2.0, the “continue reading” link below will now load the remainder of the post asynchronously (without the need to reload the whole page). In addition, there’s a nice little fade effect.
Go on, try it. You know you want to.

Here’s an article I read in the New Zealand Herald today, about how women should stop being such tacky sluts. More or less. The irony is that this announcement comes from the New Zealand Council of Women, harbingers of the doom that is “girl power”.

This post is the first of a series which I will release periodically.
The aims of this series are manifold, among them:
I acknowledge from the outset that these (short) segments are not unbiased. It is fairly clear that I have set out with a particular agenda, and am seeking to provide information which support my hypothesis. I do not intend to provide links to websites which advocate theories of anthropogenic climate change, except perhaps in order to point out their flaws. Pro-anthropogenic climate change websites are prolific and easily found - any Google search will provide a comprehensive set of links to such sites. Whilst those who advocate non-anthropogenic climate change theories are often of the highest intellectual calibre, the combination of extreme media bias and the threat of expulsion or unemployment conspires to keep them silent or, at the least, off the front page of conventional media.

So, today I went to see Juno.
Entertainment weekly describes Juno as “…a blithe charmer balanced somewhere between a life-should-be-so-neat fairy tale and a life’s-a-real-bitch tragicomedy…”.
According to slashfilm.com, “Juno is not only the best film of the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival, but it’s also the best movie of the year…”
Wrong.
Juno is unadulterated shite. It’s not just boring, pointless, poorly scripted and annoyingly ‘quirky’, it’s actually really, really fucking boring, pointless, poorly scripted and annoyingly ‘quirky’. I actually can’t believe I wasted 96 minutes of my life watching this stinking pile of animal refuse.
Given the choice, I would rather be violated by a group of sweaty Arab transvestite gorillas than sit through Juno again. Well, perhaps not, but it’d be a tough call.
This is what I hate about movie reviewers. Someone tells them that if they don’t like these off-beat works of crap they’re cultural philistines and slaves to the Hollywood propaganda machine. Consequently, these sheep then bleat the same message to us, the unsuspecting viewer.
What a load of shit. People like Hollywood blockbusters because a large number of them are well-acted, well-produced, well-filmed, well-written and actually enjoyable. Heaven forbid we go to the movies and actually enjoy ourselves.
Juno is a sad movie for me, because I really like Ellen Page. Hopefully we see more of her in movies like Hard Candy and XMen 3.
